Philippine All Stars wins 2008 World Hip Hop championship
The multi-awarded Philippine All Stars gave Filipinos another reason to be proud of when the group bagged the title in the 2008 World Hip-Hop Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday, August 3.
More than 1,000 dancers from 33 countries gathered in Las Vegas in quest for the gold. The All Stars, however, ruled the dance floor with their two-minute performance packed with flips and steps in harmony. The dancers went off stage with high hopes of winning after finishing a near perfect dance.
When they received the award, group members said they were glad for the success as they united Filipinos in that moment of glory.
“This is just a moment where everyone could just unite. In our own part, to be an inspiration not just for the people here in the championship, but to all the Filipinos out there,” said group member Sheena Vera Cruz.
She added that the group wants to give other Filipinos hope that they could also become winners given the same opportunity. Read the rest of this entry »

Set of “I Love Betty La Fea”, a first in Philippine television
The TV series may not be showing on television yet, but “I ? Betty la Fea” is already the talk of the town - from the announcement of who will play Betty and the series’ other characters, to when the cameras first started rolling for the show. Now, it’s the show’s set that’s hogging the headlines.
The 11th floor of the ELJ Building within the ABS-CBN Compound recently had a blessing, as the whole floor was transformed into the main studio of “I ? Betty la Fea”, set of the advertising agency where the characters Betty (Bea Alonzo) and Daniella (Ruffa Gutierrez) work.
Last week, the studio named Eco Moda Manila was officially opened with some of the cast members who came in character - Alonzo, Gutierrez, Meryll Soriano, Wendy Valdez, Sheryn Regis, Ronnie Liang and the other secretaries of Eco Moda.

Miss Universe organizers admit spelling error on Miss Philippines’ sash

The Philippines’ bet for Miss Universe, Jennifer Barrientos was given an official Miss Universe sash that misspelled her country’s name. “Philippines” was spelled with two Ls instead of one.
In a photo published in seattlepi.com’s Miss Universe Gallery, picture number 22 shows that Barrientos wore the misspelled sash, while sitting with Madina Taher, Miss Germany; Charlotte Labee, Miss Netherlands; and Vera Krasova, Miss Russia, during a party on June 20th.
Reports said it took almost three days for the Miss Universe Organization to correct the error. Other reports say the error remains in the official program book.
In an exclusive statement sent to abs-cbnNEWS.com by Lark-Marie Antón, the spokeswoman of the Miss Universe Organization, she admitted that a mistake was committed but said they instantly rectified it. Read the rest of this entry »

Jennifer Barrientos represents the Philippines in Miss Universe 2008
Jennifer Tarol Barrientos was born in San Mateo Rizal. She is also the Binibining Pilipinas titleholder for 2008. She is the official representative of the Philippines to the Miss Universe pageant which will take place in Nha Trang, Vietnam on July 14, 2008.
Jennifer Barrientos won the crown for Binibining Pilipinas Universe, Patricia Fernandez for International and Janina San Miguel World at the pageant’s coronation at the Araneta Coliseum late Saturday that was aired by GMA Network.
Jennifer took up Tourism in the University of Sto. Tomas, from San Mateo Rizal, previously worked in Holiday Inn and Macau Star World Hotel.
Why did you join? “It was my mother’s dream and now it’s mine.” “This will also help me achieve my other dreams such as being a model for high fashion magazines and fashion shows.”
What makes you stand out from the rest? “I always do my best. I know how to stay calm in a tight situation. My looks are also different. Many think I’m Indian but I am pure Filipino.” “I come from a Christian family so I really value my relationship with God.”

Ryan Cayabyab is Pinoy Dream Academy’s new headmaster
He’s one of the best when it comes to music–”The Maestro” Ryan Cayabyab is now the newest headmaster of ABS-CBN’s reality show “Philippine Dream Academy (PDA) Season 2.”
In an interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, Cayabyab–also known as Mr. C–said that after six years of working in the corporate world, he is now back in doing his passion — music and teaching.
“This is an important show, PDA is a very important show and ako masaya ako, it’s an honor for me to be part of the show. Sorry I was out for six years I’d been doing corporate work; tamang-tama pagkatapos noon ito si Lauren saying ‘we want you in PDA if it’s okay?’ sabi ko sure,” Cayabyab said.

KC Concepcion leads global walk vs hunger in Taguig
Actress KC Concepcion, United Nations World Food Program (WFP) ambassador, on Sunday led the walk against child hunger at the open field of Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.
Dubbed as “End Hunger: Walk the World,” the event, which was participated by an estimated 3,000 people, was aimed at raising public awareness and funds to feed 59 million poor children who attend schools on an empty stomach.
The participants began their walk at 6 a.m. and they circled around the open field for 30 minutes.
Concepcion urged the public to reach out and help the children who are dying because of hunger especially now that prices of basic commodities continue to go up.
Social Welfare Secretary Esperanza Cabral echoed Concepcion’s call, saying that each individual should do his own share to combat hunger.
The walk against hunger, an initiative of WFP, was simultaneously done in other countries.

Ruffa Gutierrez joins the cast of “Yo Soy Betty La Fea” Philippine Version
TV host Ruffa Gutierrez will join the cast of the much-awaited television series “Yo Soy Betty La Fea!” with actress Bea Alonzo as Betty.
The exclusive official announcement was made through ABS-CBN’s “The Buzz.” Gutierrez will play the role of Daniella. Aside from Alonzo, Gutierrez is another big star chosen to be part of the cast.
The production’s casting is still ongoing, as well as the voting in unofficial polls for the role of the leading man, Armando. When Bea found out that Gutierrez would join “Yo Soy Betty La Fea,” her reaction was simple. “She’s perfect for the role! I love it.”
Gutierrez’s scenes with Alonzo is something to look forward to. It is exciting that an international beauty queen will be Alonzo’s co-star in the program.

Marvin Raymundo represents the Philippines in Manhunt International tilt
Coverboy member Marvin Raymundo will represent the Philippines in the 2008 Manhunt International World contest in Seoul, set for Monday, June 2, with more than 50 countries competing.
In 2004 and in 2007, Marvin was named one of the Cosmopolitan Bachelors. Marvin stands 5’11″ and weighs 160 lbs. A member of the ASAP Coverboys (together with Zanjoe Marudo, Jake Cuenca, Victor Basa, Rafael Rosell, Jon Avila, John James Uy and Haroun Morales), Marvin is also an endorser for Smart, Globe, Oishi, Cali, Cream-O, Greenwich, Modess and Jollibee.
A Kapampangan, Marvin is the youngest of three children (one brother and one sister). Young singer Charice once again proved her singing prowess as she got two standing ovations for her performance with musician-record producer David Foster’s discoveries for a benefit concert at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas last Friday, May 23rd.
For the event entitled “David Foster & Friends” in front of an audience of almost 10,000, Charice sang a medley of Whitney Houston’s hits- “I Will Always Love You” and “I Have Nothing”.

Pinay Actress Mercedes Cabral to Star in Park Chan-wook’s ‘Thirst’

Young Filipina actress Mercedes Cabral has been choses to star in a South Korean film to be directed by 2004 Cannes Grand Prix-winning filmmaker Park Chan-wook.
Cabral, a 21 year-old UP Fine Arts student was Park’s personal choice from among several Asian hopefuls to star in “Thirst”, a horror-film now in pre-production. Shooting is scheduled to start in April.
“Hindi po ako makapaniwala na mapipili ako. Nagpadala lang po kami ng screener ko at nagustuhan naman nila. I am kinda nervous. (I couldn’t believe myself. We just sent a screener to Korea and they liked it very much),” Mercedes confided to abs-cbnnews.com.
A favorite in the independent film circuit, Cabral recently proved her acting skills by winning the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2007 UP Inbox TV and Radio Festival for her sterling performance in the digital film “Bitin,” produced by Good Vibes Productions.
