Fred DeAsis : First Asian artist honored by Saks Fifth Avenue

Saks Fifth Avenue, a leading high-end department store in America, honored internationally renowned Fil-Am artist Fred DeAsis by offering an Artist Reception and Cocktail party Saturday, June 7, in Highland Park, Illinois. The party was in celebration of the annual Highland Park Art Walk being held during the month of June.

Fred DeAsis’ artwork titled “Koi” is currently on display at Saks Fifth front show window on Elm Place and Green Bay Road, Highland Park. The 36″ x 48″ brightly colored and texturized artwork was done using acrylic and impasto/encaustic technique on hard board.

“We are very pleased to have Mr. DeAsis’ artwork displayed in our front display window. Customers and window shoppers enjoy the colorful and unique technique rendered on the art. Manuel Baldemor holds exhibit in Oslo

World-renowned Filipino artist Manuel Baldemor will hold a three-day exhibit at the groundfloor of the Norway’s Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs in connection with the celebration of the 110th Philippine Independence and the year-long commemoration of the 60 years of RP-Norway diplomatic relations.

Dubbed, Images of the Philippines and Norway, the exhibit will run from 2 – 4 June 2008. The show also coincides with the celebration of Norway’s Cultural Diversity 2008.

The exhibit was first shown to the members of the diplomatic corp on Friday, 30 May 2008. Ambassador Victoria S. Bataclan welcomed the guests during the initial show and introduced Mr. Baldemor as the “real ambassador” saying his numerous exhibits abroad have greatly helped promote not just his works but the Philippine country as well.

For his part, Mr. Baldemor expressed his appreciation for his participation to the Norway’s program of Cultural Diversity 2008. Read the rest of this entry »

Joe Datuin : A Filipino artist wins prize for Beijing Olympics sculpture artwork  

A Filipino artist has won the grand prize for the sculpture category of the Olympic Sports and Art Contest of the International Olympic Committee and his works will be on display at the Olympic Expo in Beijing.

Joe Datuin, who is from Dagupan, Pangasinan in northern Philippines, bested other artists from 36 countries and regions for his masterpiece entitled “Dancing Rings”, said the report.

Inspired by the 2008 Olympics emblem “Dancing Beijing,” Datutin’s “Dancing Emblem” which looks like a man (in white) dancing and surrounded by the color red would be rewarded 30,000 U.S. dollars and a diploma, according to the report.

Pinoy Tattoo lovers join tattooing events in Tacloban City

Pinoy Tattoo lovers in region 8 and other parts of the country will be joining two separate tattooing events on May 18, 2008 at CAP Bldg. (Price Mansion) and RTR Plaza, Tacloban City.

The tattoo symposium which will be held morning of May 18 at CAP Bldg will speculate on the “Pintado” tattoo motifs of yesteryears basing on the diffusion it had from its South East Asian and Pacific neighbors such as Borneo, Samoa, Fiji, Tahiti and etc., which has a great influence on the pintado tattoo people which the Spaniards used to call.

This was disclosed by Leyte Heritage Society Visual Arts coordinator Dulce Cuna in an interview.

According to Ms. Cuna, the artists who will be attending the symposium from the academe and government sector will know more on the speculative treatise on how close Borneo, Tongan, Samoan tattoo motifs may be to the vanished “Pintado” tattoo.
